A House Wood Stove (1900)
A wood burring kitchen stove like Opal's mother used

Photo of a wood burning house stove

This is what most people's kitchen stoves looked like 100 years ago. They were heated by wood - which had to be cut and refilled frequently.

Wood stoves were used to cook on and as heat for the house. You also had to boil hot water for baths on the stove before indoor plumbing.
Paragraph 99: Helping bring wood for the stove and empty ashes

Paragraph 133: Opal cries a good-bye song for the wood
