The talking fir trees
The talking fir trees along Layng Road

Tall trees behind a barn

This is a photo of "the talking fir trees" that Opal writes about. They are still standing - north of Mosby Creek on Layng Road. The barn was also there in Opal's time.

Opal believes that nature is alive and aware. Trees, creeks, and animals can all speak if we can hear and understand their language. This is another example of Opal's use of "personification", giving human characteristics to animals or trees.

Paragraph 9: the talking fir trees on the road to the upper logging camps and the Bohemia gold mines

Scene 45: a Ride on William Shakespeare past the talking fir trees
